Coddington History Group -

CHG is a membership group formed in 2003 by residents of Coddington Village near Newark in Nottinghamshire.

It is not exclusive to residents though and the idea behind the Group is to:

  • bring together those interested in Coddington's history and provide a forum and focus for village research
  • collect and curate information about the village and its history (its people, institutions, buildings and environment), ensuring knowledge is retained for posterity and available in publications
  • promote an interest in history (especially of local and family history) within the village by organising activities, talks and exhibitions for members and for local residents, visitors and Coddington School
  • encourage the view that our heritage should be valued and preserved
  • support other local and national groups with similar aims.

GET INVOLVED ....

Since it was formed, the History Group has collected a substantial archive of records; photos (old and new), news clippings, drawings, documents and personal memories about bygone Coddington.

This has created a collected knowledge that is being added to constantly - please help if you have any historic items that you are willing to share with the History Group.  It would be ideal for the Group to capture any old Coddington family photos and there is a particularly urgent need to salvage information from the old paper deeds of Coddington buildings before they are discarded as being no longer required for conveyancing once the property is added to the Land Registry.

As well as adding to the Group's archive, you can contribute to ever-needed resources; there are often opportunities for management team involvement and new researchers and transcribers are always welcome.  Please contact us [ here ] for more info about getting involved.

SUPPORT THE GROUP ....

CHG holds regular evening lectures featuring local history subjects.  Usually these are held in Coddington Village Hall although recently several sessions have been held on-line.  Everyone is welcome to attend and admission always includes tea and biscuits (Members £1.00 and Non Members £2.00).  For the forthcoming events click [ here ].

CHG also holds occasional public exhibitions, sometimes split between the Village Hall and the former village National School (next door - now used as the Scout Hall).  Ideally, these exhibitions will be timed to coincide with All Saints Church being opened to visitors, making it an ideal heritage event for the village.

Other activities include visits to local sites and other heritage groups.

Getting involved in Coddington village life

People today are very busy with work, family and leisure commitments.  Whether you just want to pass on some information after clearing a cupboard, visit one of the exhibitions or attend a presentation you will be very welcome.  However much you would like to be involved, CHG will provide you with the opportunity to be part of Coddington's cultural heritage.  The Group is informal and lively and offers as little or as much involvement as you wish.  [ join CHG here ]

 

 Some key achievements by CHG:

  • the Group has published a Coddington Heritage Trail Leaflet, sent to all village households, made available locally and posted on-line [ here ]
  • produced a book of historic photographs of the village - issued to all village households
  • in collaboration with the church, CHG celebrated the centenary of the start of WWI by producing a commemorative book featuring members of the village who served in the Great War.  A PDF version of the book is available [ here ]
  • CHG members completed a comprehensive survey of the church memorials (both inside and outside) to record the monumental inscriptions of village ancestors
  • as a follow-on from the Grave Survey, CHG produced a plan of the graveyard - incorporated onto a display board (currently stored inside All Saints church and available to view there on request).
  • over time, CHG has created and maintained a substantial transcription of Coddington Parish Registers
